FlickerLab Builds An Animated Photo-Montage Promo for A&E's "Flip this House" (September 18, 2006)

For the newest season of A&E Network?s hour-long ?docu-soap? Flip This House, a view of the high pressure world of home ?flipping,? FlickerLab, the New York-based development, design and animation studio, created an animated :20 photo-montage. The promo premiered on A&E in mid-August.

The animation demonstrates how to  ?Find, Fix and Flip for Profit.? An animated real estate prospector drives by, spots a derelict home, backs up, jumps out and yells  ?I?ll take it.? In short order, with the help of a well-muscled crew and their heavy equipment, the dilapidated dwelling is turned into a moneymaker.

Flip This House, which airs nationally on Sundays at 8PM/ET on A&E, tackles one of the most exciting aspects of today's high-stakes real estate market - the transformation of an eyesore into a profit-making beauty. The series follows the travails of two real-estate developers in the hot housing markets of San Antonio and Atlanta, where each boasts a team of characters that buys homes, renovates them, then flips them for a profit. It sounds simple, but sparks fly and tempers are high before the fixer-uppers sell to happy buyers.

FlickerLab?s Managing Partner/Creative Director Harold Moss, explained ?We used Eric Merola?s photo-montage style and condensed the hour long story arc of the show into :15 of animation, plus an endpage.  It is great fun working with such a barebones storytelling style.? ?To tell the entire narrative in the very brief time we were allotted, Harold and I chose a time lapse animation approach so that the promo does indeed mirror the renovation process demonstrated in each show,? added Eric Merola, Flickerlab Animation Director/2D Animator.

A&E Associate Producer, On-Air Promotions, Andrew Borden-Chisholm said of the collaboration with FlickerLab, ?Their styles are beautiful and completely unique. They are quick, their turnaround time is unbelievable, and they always have a couple very creative ideas to present. Flip This House is a very elaborate design with a lot happening in it. The photo-montage makes the promo pop while maintaining the excitement, the craziness and the turmoil of the show. The Flickerlab team is extraordinarily creative, highly collaborative and their work contribution always unique. I love working with them.?

The FlickerLab team included Creative Director Harold Moss; Executive Producers Tammy Walters and Karen Stewart; Animation Director/2D Animator Eric Merola; Designer Zartosh Soltani; Senior Producer Mike Sullo; Additional Animators Chris Conforti and Craig Hubbard; and Associate Producer Sarah Brown. FlickerLab utilized Adobe After Effects and Photoshop in the execution of this project.

Representing A&E were Vice President/Creative Director, Director On-Air Promotions Valerie Albanese and Associate Producer Andrew Borden-Chisholm.

Both the sound design and final audio mix were supplied by Mike Dillenberger of Digital Arts (New York, NY).

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
