Rhinoceros Animates and Posts Savage Garden's "Crash and Burn"

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, May 22, 2000 - Rhinoceros Visual Effects and Design recently completed the CGI, graphics and compositing for Columbia Records/Savage Garden's latest music video, "Crash and Burn." The four-minute fantasy-driven, surreal video is a densely layered story featuring a series of flashbacks that reveal the difficulties two lovers have in communicating with each other.

Director Yariv Garber, working with Moxie Pictures/Los Angeles chose Inferno Artist Vico Sharabani, continuing their enduring, collaborative relationship. The two had previously teamed up for Third Eye Blind's "Jumper" video. They spent four days in pre-production planning the details in advance; these included shooting with both black backgrounds and green screens, CGI and seven layers of compositing. The story's sequence of flashbacks quickly and elegantly dissolves from the past when the lovers were conflicted, to the present, and is accentuated by many rich details designed for repeat viewings.

The setting, an industrial space shot in L.A., was dramatically enhanced with digital lighting and evokes a sense of visual melancholy. Garber, an internationally influenced creator, accomplished a magisterial synthesis of different styles, including Dada (the French-inspired movement), into a complex and unified vision.

Vico explains his contribution: "As artists we don't produce a certain kind of work over and over; there is no predominant style. It doesn't make any difference what style the director's looking for; we adapt to that vision and work in that style on that project. This was fun to work on because it incorporated a lot of stimulating creative influences."

For Rhinoceros, Ronen Sharabani, Nathan Walker and Nicklaus Schlumpf were Inferno artists; and Sven Weidner was the CGI animator. Animators included Lynn Bacino, Ji Yoon, and Joon Seolee.
