Vicon Announces the Debut of M-Series Camera

The Fastest, Highest Resolution Camera for Optical Motion Capture, at NAB 2000

Tustin, CA --(March 28, 2000)-- Vicon Motion Systems, the leading developer of optical motion capture systems announced today the M-Series Camera (MCam), the most accurate camera for optical motion capture available in the market. This camera captures four times the resolution of existing CCD camera technology used in motion capture at 1,000,000 pixels, it is simply the highest resolution and fastest of any motion capture camera available today. MCam will ship with Vicon 8, the same motion capture system used to capture motion for "Titanic", "The Mummy", "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" and other top television, feature film and video game productions. A live motion capture demo featuring Vicon 8 and MCam will be on display at Vicon’s NAB booth, April 10-13, Booth M9949 at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Vicon researchers and engineers have developed and are manufacturing MCam in-house. MCam is a 120Hz progressive scan camera that achieves an unprecedented 1,000 x 1,000 pixel resolution. The new MCam technology offers users huge increases in performance while capturing the subtleties of human and non-human motion. The Vicon 8 system, equipped with 100 Mbit Ethernet is uniquely suited to handle the high data rates associated with these cameras. The system captures the nuances of facial and full body motion with unequalled accuracy and provides real world production capability for single or multiple subject performances. Up to 24 cameras can be supported by a single Vicon 8 datastation. These cameras are fully integrated with the robust Vicon 8 system, allowing more continuous and accurate data than any other optical motion capture solution.

Benefits of MCam

  • * More accurate capture of markers for both facial and full body is achieved due to increased resolution.
  • * With enhanced resolution and accuracy the Vicon 8 motion capture system can easily distinguish between markers which are touching and over lapping.
  • * As a result of the 1000 X 1000 high-resolution capability and the new digital strobe technology, MCam can see much deeper through a capture volume, thereby increasing the active area for performance.
  • * VGA out from each MCam camera allows the user to position the camera remotely using a handheld monitor.
  • * New high output strobe design further extends MCam’s range. Software controlled intensity ensures optimized performance for large and small volume capture.
  • * Only the Vicon 8 system, with its unlimited markers, and 24-hour capture can integrate cameras with such high data rates.

Brian Nilles, Vicon USA’s CEO comments, "Vicon’s engineering team has again proven itself as a world class provider of leading edge technology, having developed and manufactured this new camera entirely in-house. The new camera technology offers incredible value to our traditional motion capture customer base—and because no other camera in the world can match the MCam frame rate and resolution, customers across several industries are integrating the technology for other applications."
