Acquisition
of Popular SAN-Based Network Technology Incorporated in Discreet Nonlinear
Editing Solutions
MONTREAL,
--(March 21, 2000)-- Discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc. (Nasdaq:
ADSK), announced that it has recently acquired all rights to the JobNet
technology and related software products from Number One GM, a Bulgarian-based
research, development, and sales organization specializing in high-speed
networking and storage solutions. As a result of this acquisition, Discreet
will incorporate JobNet Manager, the popular workgroup editing solution
based on Storage Array Network (SAN) technology, into Discreet's line
of Windows NT-based editing solutions.
Discreet's first implementation of the JobNet technology will enable
workgroup-editing and project-sharing capabilities within edit*, Discreet's
Windows NT-based nonlinear editing solution for postproduction and broadcast
applications. JobNet Manager gives multiple edit* users the ability
to work in a real-time networked environment, accessing and sharing
the same media and project metadata from a central data store. Through
the use of a centralized single SAN and JobNet Manager, multiple edit*
users benefit from increased efficiency and cost savings.
Additionally, Discreet's compositing, effects, and animation solutions
can also share media stored on the SAN. Given the existing product integration
between edit*, paint*, effect*, and 3D Studio MAX(R) software, customers
can now build complete Windows NT-based content creation suites using
a single shared storage solution.
"Through this acquisition, Discreet continues its commitment to the
broadcast and postproduction community by responding to their requests
for a dynamic, collaborative, nonlinear production environment,"
said Godfrey Sullivan, general manager and executive vice president
of Discreet. "The acquisition is part of Discreet's committed strategy
to expand and enhance its infrastructure and integration offerings to
enable our customers greater efficiencies in project completion."
JobNet Manager's SAN-based redundancy capabilities support the stringent
data security requirements found within the broadcast and postproduction
environments. edit* users have the flexibility to access projects and
all associated elements from anywhere on the SAN, providing a failsafe
protocol for protection from workstation failure.
The JobNet-enabled edit* systems provide additional cost savings through
their ability to operate in a wide range of network and storage configurations.
Customers installing JobNet can work in either a peer-to-peer or central
server configuration.
Discreet has been working with JobNet technology for the past 18 months
and has installed edit* and JobNet at key broadcast and postproduction
facilities around the world. The technology acquisition and continued
development efforts reflect Discreet's strong desire to bring to market
advanced, optimized editing environments for postproduction and broadcast.
Workgroup edit* environments using JobNet will be available by Q2 2000.
