ATLANTA,
GEORGIA (APRIL 21, 2000) -- Giant Studios, the motion capture and animation
studio, has doubled its capabilities with the opening of a fully equipped
operation in Santa Monica, California.
Internationally renowned software and hardware developer and Academy Award winner, William O. Schultz, Giant Studios Chief Technology Officer (CTO), will head up the West Coast studio. "Our primary focus in Los Angeles will be feature film and television visual effects," states Schultz. "As well, we will be working with game developers, commercial production houses and other animation studios." Giant Studios President/CEO, Candice Alger, notes that "This expansion is part of our original goal to roll out operations on the West Coast in Spring of 2000 to directly serve the clients in the Los Angeles community." Schultz has projects in the pipeline and is hiring a full creative and technical staff. Among the first appointments is Barry Dempsey, who recently worked on "Hollow Man," and was previously a founder of gaming company Xatrix. Dempsey joins Giantıs West Coast operations as a Research Engineer. Giant Studios West has a 5,000 square foot stage and 1,750 square feet of office space in the heart of the red hot Santa Monica media community. The stage is fully outfitted with Giantıs Motion Reality motion capture system, the technology that is defining the future of motion capture. The companyıs corporate headquarters will remain in Atlanta, Georgia. The two facilities will be connected digitally and can utilize resources from both locations as needed for projects. They will both employ a per-project bidding structure, which allows clients more creative flexibility. Schultz is excited about the West Coast facility because "This is where the heart of production is. Motion capture is an underutilized technology and when people see the quality of the data we get, they are blown away. Equally, animators love this system for its ease of use and the realtime compositing and feedback they get with our Nuance motion editing software." Both Schultz and Alger see the potential uses by feature film studios and the broadcast industry as virtually limitless. "It breaks down a lot of barriers people are used to facing," says Shultz. "Everybody wants to see the system," he remarks, "and once they do, it opens their eyes to fantastic creative possibilities."
