AE6.0 Overview Part 3: Motion Tracking

Step 10: Click on the Options button. Because we will be adding additional buttons later for possible tracking, it might be a good idea to rename the Tracking Point.

Because this is an NTSC Interlaced clip you might think that we need to turn on Track Fields. If you have a difficult time getting the tracker to follow the fingers because of the interlaced lines, you can turn this option on. For this first track, we are okay, so we can leave it unchecked.[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Step 11: The dots on the actor’s fingers could have been any color (except blue if there were plans to do a key), and since you are dealing with color information, that is what we will use to track.

Click on the Tracker Plug-in Options button and make set the Use Channel to RGB.

Because we are tracking color and because there is no significant grain or compression artifacts in this portion of the clip, Process Before Match can be left off.

Step 12: Click OK for both of the open windows and run the Analysis by clicking on the Analyze Forward button. Make sure your Time Marker is at the IN point!

If you have problems with the analysis, you can always back the Time Marker to the last good tracked position, make adjustments to the Search and Feature region boxes, and start the analysis from that point.

Step 13: When you are satisfied with the analysis, click the Apply button to apply the data to the button layer.

Close the Layer window and create a RAM Preview. If everything was done correctly, the button should track to the actor’s finger perfectly.

The result of a proper track- the CG button follows the finger exactly.
