NewTek's Video Toaster 2 - Beyond the Vision

Of course the package includes an excellent CG, 3D DVE, proc amp, still store, genlock (with built-in TBCs), background generator, audio mixer, downstream keyer, chroma keyer, waveform monitor/vectorscope, etc. All realtime, with intuitive hardware-like interfaces instead of the usual splines and sliders. Video Toaster 2 also ships with an optimized version of Lightwave 3D that creates logo animations virtually automatically, not forcing the operator to become a 3D animator. It also comes with an optimized version of Aura 2.5 that lets you paint over video in real time. [an error occurred while processing this directive] The standard hardware card comes with component (Beta and MII levels), composite and Y/C video I/O plus it will accept any firewire card you have in the computer as another I/O source. The optional SX-8 Switcher Expansion Module gives you eight component inputs and four outputs, or eight Y/C inputs or even 24 composite inputs. Any combination of those is possible and this module also gives you multiple balanced and unbalanced audio. By the way, this expansion module is not needed if all you want to do is use the nonlinear editing capabilities of Toaster 2.

Now, the price. It chops, slices and dices and will save you time and money. So how much would you expect to pay for a product like this? Just $2,995.00, ladies and gentlemen. And $1,995.00 for the optional Switcher Expansion Module.

The folks at NewTek have apparently done it right once again. This time without the limitations of the original Toaster. Founder Tim Jenison was certainly very proud of the new product during the presentation. When I asked if his original Toaster vision had finally come true, now that the computing power exists, he replied that not really. It turned out to be capable of a lot more than what he had originally envisioned.

I can’t wait to get a review unit and put it to work with real projects to see how well it does in daily usage. If it works as well as I think it will, NewTek may be in a very good position to once again assume the pole position in the desktop video race.
