Episode 6: Holograms

Darth Vader was a white guy?
Most people don’t have the deep booming signature voice of James Earl Jones that added to Darth Vader’s sinister presence, but you can tweak your audio to at least change the pitch. As an added bonus, let’s use Sound Forge to change the subject’s voice. While we may not end up with the deep baritones, it should be spooky enough.

If you don’t have Sonic Foundry’s Sound Forge, find an audio editing program that will let you change the pitch, while preserving the duration of an audio clip.

Load the Hologram_with_alpha.avi into Sound Forge. We are using this clip as our audio source (providing you rendered the movie with sound), because the track length may have changed - if you cropped the duration from the original - and you want to make sure the audio stays synced.

Go to Effects>Pitch>Shift, and shift the Semitones for this audio to -4 (lowering the voice), and check the Preserve Duration box. This will make sure the length of the clip stays the same.

Apply the effect, and then save the audio file as Deep_Voice.wav (or audio format of your choice), and you are done. Save it as a different file just in case your director doesn’t like how much you shifted the pitch. The original is there if you need it.

Wasn’t that simple?

Back in Adobe After Effects, import this audio file and place it into the composition.

Render this final movie out, making sure that Audio Output is turned on.

Variations on a theme
This in no way is the only way to create a hologram. You should vary this formula to meet with your individualistic taste. Chances are you are going to change angels on your hologram, for close shots or wide shots. In this instance, you may want to enlarge or shrink your Video Garbage composition to match.

Some other things you might want to try include:
    Creating a holographic chess set
    Heads up displays
Applying this technique to create ghosts and other specters
